For most of us, our phones have become a part of us. We won't leave the house without our phones just like we won't leave the house without clothes. If you have a gadget you're going to carry around with you everywhere, you really should get the most out of it. With a smartphone, there's a whole world of new things you can do.

Aside from making voice calls and sending text messages, you can connect to the internet with your smartphone which enables you to send emails and make social network updates. Smartphones are also great for playing music and games, watching TV programmes and movies, and taking photos and videos.

Choosing a Smartphone based on the Operating System
There are four main smartphone operating systems: Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS. The choice of smartphone you’d buy should be based on the operating system which works best for you.

Apple iOS: This is only found on Apple's iPhone. It is very easy and intuitive to use, and has a wide range of high-quality apps in its apps store. It is however quite expensive.

Android: Google's Android is found on a wide range of smartphones including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung. It is great if you mainly use Google services (eg Gmail, Google Docs etc.), and has a very good app store. They are usually cheaper than iPhones.

BlackBerry OS: This is found only on BlackBerry smartphones. The main feature of Blackberry OS is the strong support for email and messaging also known as Blackberry Messanger (BBM).

Windows Phone: Microsoft's Windows mobile operating system is found on smartphones such as HTC, Nokia and Samsung. It is easy to use and very good for social networking, with the main screen sporting Facebook and Twitter updates, emails and shared photos.

What to look out for
When buying a smartphone, some important features to look out for include

Battery Life & Memory
The most practical products are compact, include good input and display options, and enough battery life to last through a full day’s work and beyond. Samsung Galaxy S Mobile offers more than 8 hours battery life.

Screen Size

Phones with screens between 3.5 to 4.5-inches are easy to use in one-hand such as the Nokia Lumia with 3.7" screen. However, some larger screen phones with 5-7 inches are ideal for viewing web pages or watching videos.

Sharp Display
It’s not just the size you need to worry about, display resolution and screen technology are also very important. This enables you to see vivid photos and videos, sharp and easy to read text, and can be used easily even in bright sunlight. Phones with great display include the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Powerful Processor
With a fast processor, a phone can work faster and be able to run several apps at once. Smartphones with Qualcomm’s S4 Snapdragon such as the Nokia Lumia 920 or Nvidia’s Tegra 3  are exceptionally powerful.

The best smartphones for multimedia have a tendency to have cameras of about 5 megapixels and above, also as front facing cameras for playing and recording videos. Blackberry Curve 9360 has a 5MP while Blackberry Z10 has an 8MP camera.

Good Apps Store
The very best smartphone for you will have access to the apps you would like to make use of. Android and iOS smartphones have the very best selection.
