About This Product
  • Essential performance in one, simple package
  • Seamless manageability
  • The best security, right out of the box
  • Compact design. Big display
  • Ports and slots
  • Dimensions and weight

The screen on the OptiPlex 3240 is a 21.5-inch 1,920-by-1080 non-touch panel that displays full HD video with great clarity, though it's not as vivid as the 23.8-inch 4K panel found on the OptiPlex 7440. A thick black bezel surrounds the screen, with a small LED light on the bottom-right corner that lets you know if the system is on or is asleep. On the back of the desktop, you'll find several recessed ports: two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, one Ethernet, and one DisplayPort and one HDMI Out (for connecting to another monitor), along with the power supply. On the left edge of the system, there are two more USB 3.0 ports, a headphone jack, and a smart card reader. We like to have at least a few ports on the side of the system; ports that are only on the back can be difficult to reach. As on the OptiPlex 7440, there are three buttons above the Power button on the right edge for putting the monitor to sleep and adjusting its brightness. Also on the right side, slightly more toward the back, is a DVD/CD-RW drive. This is a generous port selection for an all-in-one, and should be fine for most business users.

It's relatively easy to get to the system's internals if you need to upgrade or replace them, unlike on the Apple iMac. Just press a button on the back to release the monitor from the stand; this reveals a small door through which you can access the OptiPlex 3240's components, such as its hard drive and memory. Our review unit came with a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and 8GB of memory, so boot time was speedy. A number of storage options are available when configuring your system so you can balance speed and cost to meet your needs. For our configuration, 128GB is pretty light, especially if you have a lot of large files to store for work. A wireless keyboard and mouse are bundled with the system. The full-size keyboard is snappy to type on, with responsive chiclet-style keys. The mouse is a rather plain Logitech model.
